چکیده

We report two experiments in this article that were designed to investigate the role of retrieval constraints and interference in implicit learning of new verbal associations in a densely amnesic participant, C.V., who had presumably sustained medial temporal lobe damage secondary to an anoxic episode. In Experiment 1, repeatedly studied novel sentences produced significant priming with Sentence1Fragment retrieval cues that provided maximal perceptual support as well as perceptual priming for the single-word targets. However, little learning was observed when no perceptual cues were provided for the target itself with the Sentence1??? retrieval cues. In Experiment 2, the effects of intraexperimental interference were measured by examining new verbal learning under the Study-Only, Study-Immediate test, Test-Study training conditions. Unlike in the findings reported in prior studies, C.V. showed little learning with the Sentence1??? retrieval cues even under the minimal interference, Study-Only, condition. Together, these results demonstrate that implicit access to novel verbal associations at a level more abstract than their perceptual configurations is not ubiquitously observed in dense amnesia even when the learning conditions are optimized. These results provide a window into the processes that mediate implicit learning of novel verbal associations when the explicit memory contribution is minimized. © 2000 Academic Press

Genetically Induced Retrograde Amnesia of Associative Memories After Neuroplastin Ablation

BACKGROUND Neuroplastin cell recognition molecules have been implicated in synaptic plasticity. Polymorphisms in the regulatory region of the human neuroplastin gene (NPTN) are correlated with cortical thickness and intellectual abilities in adolescents and in individuals with schizophrenia. METHODS We characterized behavioral and functional changes in inducible conditional neuroplastin-defic...

Associative learning and memory duration of Trichogramma brassicae

Learning ability and memory duration are two inseparable factors which can increase theefficiency of a living organism during its lifetime. Trichgramma brassice Bezdenko (Hym.:Trichogrammatidae) is a biological control agent widely used against different pest species. This research was conducted to study the olfactory associative learning ability and memoryduration of T. brassicae under laborato...

Acquisition and transfer of new verbal information in amnesia: retrieval and neuroanatomical constraints.

Four experiments examined new associative learning in amnesia by contrasting the performance of 2 amnesic participants-1 (C.C.) with basal forebrain damage and the other (R.H.) with medial temporal lobe damage--and 3 controls. Both amnesic individuals were severely impaired on explicit memory measures but showed intact perceptual priming. On the new associations measures, only C.C., not R.H., e...

Higher-order associative learning in amnesia: evidence from the serial reaction time task.

Patients with anterograde amnesia are commonly believed to exhibit normal implicit learning. Research with the serial reaction time (SRT) task suggests that normal subjects can implicitly learn visuospatial sequences through a process that is sensitive to higher-order information that is more complex than pairwise associations between adjacent stimuli. The present research reexamined SRT learni...

Is there something special about the self? A neuropsychological case study

One of the most exciting trends in psychology has been the increasing use of data and conceptual tools derived from the study of patients with neuropsychological syndromes to address questions about normal mental function. To date, however, personality theorists seldom have considered neuropsychological case material (Klein & Kihlstrom, 1998). In this paper we show how neuropsychological eviden...
